If the demonstration project meets its goal of reducing building energy, Massport will consider expanding the turbine installations to other Massport facilities. Along with wind turbines, Massport is evaluating other proven renewable energy technologies at its facilities, including, solar power, geothermal technology, and fuel cell applications.
Kinton, Jr. Massport is a national leader in embracing environmental initiatives. Massport developed the first LEED-certified airport terminal in the world; the first ISO airport, container terminal, and bridge in the United States; and a number of innovative air-quality emission reduction programs, including preferred hybrid and alternative fuel vehicle parking. The watt wind turbine system provides clean, reliable, non-polluting electric power.
Each module fastens to the parapet of a building, weighs approximately 90 pounds, and measures approximately 6 feet in height and 8 feet in width. This urban turbine is a unique design, intended to continue to produce electricity under turbulent wind conditions and in both low- and high-wind speed environments. We promote the use of wind turbines whenever possible. The City has several efforts and projects underway. The Boston Redevelopment Authority created new zoning laws for wind turbines.
These regulations have standardized:. The regulations make installing wind turbines easier and faster. They also protect natural and historic resources, and public safety. Some of the Ogin technology has been acquired by Vestas, based in Denmark. But the company peaked at about people, most of whom have since been laid off. None of the current or former Ogin executives I contacted by phone and e-mail responded to requests for interviews, nor did founder Stanley Kowalski III, who is now chief executive of a startup in Wilbraham called FloDesign Sonics.
And about that turbine on Deer Island? It has turned into a kind of tombstone for Ogin. Scott Kirsner can be reached at kirsner pobox. Follow him on Twitter ScottKirsner.
